At present, I am working as a freelance medical writer. Before this I worked for four and a half years at a senior level in contract research organisations (from November 2000 to June 2002 at CroMedica, Victoria, BC, Canada, and from 1997 to 2000 at Covance, Maidenhead, UK). At both companies, my responsibilities included the writing of clinical research documents, client liaison, line management, training within the department, process improvement, template development, and project management of medical writing tasks. My first job as a medical writer was from 1995 to 1997, at Nycomed Austria GmbH, Vienna, within an international clinical R&D team; here I researched, wrote, and edited a variety of documents. From 1993 to 1995 I worked as a monitor of clinical studies at a contract research organisation, Dr Paul Meng Consultant in Vienna. I was responsible for the organisation and monitoring of clinical trials in Austria and Eastern Europe, writing standard operating procedures and study protocols, and training investigators in Good Clinical Practice.
